Content Sequences

Learning events can be ordered in a variety of ways that help learners develop mental schemas for retaining knowledge. A content sequence is considered meaningful if “the sequence in which content is presented affects its meaning” (WCAG, SC 1.3.2). The order in which information and experiences are presented can enhance or detract from a learning experience (InstructionalDesign.org).

Chronological Sequence

Observe history as it occurred.

Developmental Stages Sequence

Follow along as something matures.

Easy-to-Hard Sequence

Start simply and add more challenge.

Hierarchical Sequence

Build understanding starting from basic concepts.

Mnemonic Sequence

Follow the order of a memory-aid.

Narrative Sequence

Follow a story's plot.

Procedural Sequence

Follow the steps of a process.

Reverse Engineering Sequence

Deconstruct the end result to figure out its parts.

Spiral Sequence

Revisit and build upon previously taught concepts at increasing levels of complexity.
